Mindanao Unveiled: Discovering the Philippines’ Southern Jewel

Introduction

Hi there, fellow travelers! Welcome or welcome back to my blog. I hope you’re all doing well! Took me a while to post part two of my previous Mindanao Blog which you can read here. If you’re curious about what to do, what to see, and what to eat when you’re in the land of Mindanao, read on! I also have a lot of other blog posts on my trips around the world so whether you’re a newbie traveler or a certified globetrotter, feel free to check those out.

Requirements

Of course, traveling requires preparation and planning. Depending on where you’re going, you may need vaccinations, visas, and other travel documents. It’s important to research the specific requirements for your destination well in advance of your trip. It’s also essential to be aware of safety considerations, such as crime and political instability, and to take appropriate precautions to ensure your safety while traveling. For my trip to Mindanao, there’s no need to prepare any other documents, but just bring your vaccination card to be sure! Some establishments may ask for it, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you don’t want the hassle of looking for cheap flights or flight reservations you can always visit Filo Online Ticketing to help you with that!

Get to Know Mindanao

Welcome to Mindanao, the Philippines’ hidden gem, where untamed beauty, cultural treasures, and warm smiles beckon adventurous travelers. Nestled in the south, this second-largest island remains an uncharted paradise, often overshadowed by its more touristy counterparts. But beyond the misconceptions lies a realm bursting with soul-stirring experiences waiting to be embraced. Join me on this captivating journey as emerald mountains meet azure seas, where age-old traditions blend harmoniously with modern aspirations, creating an oasis of authenticity that will leave an indelible mark on your wanderlust soul.

Why We Chose Sultan Kudarat

My friend Alex and I went together on this trip. We planned to visit La Palmera in Sultan Kudarat. I searched for a cheaper alternative to get there. I discovered that starting from General Santos City would be a better and cheaper option. We opted to come from Davao for our return flight to Manila.

We chose Sultan Kudarat because of its blend of natural wonders and rich cultural tapestry. It encourages adventurous souls like us to seek an off-the-beaten-path escapade. The province is a treasure trove of pristine landscapes, from the majestic mountain ranges that kiss the sky, to the shimmering lakes that mirror the heavens. But it’s not just the scenic beauty that makes Sultan Kudarat a hidden gem; it’s also the warm embrace of its people and their traditions.

Day 1: General Santos Tour

We toured General Santos City on our first day. Known for being the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, we were excited to visit the Tuna Port but due to time constraints, we weren’t able to go. Fortunately, we were able to explore Sanchez’s Peak. The tour cost around 1,500PHP/head via habal-habal (motorcycle ride). After the mountain trip, we went to Balut Park to get some snacks.

Exploring Sanchez Peak

As the tallest point in the city, soaring 243.84 meters above the sea, this haven is nestled on the crossroads of Barangays Conel and Olympog.

We were captivated as we stood atop Sanchez Peak, where an extraordinary panorama of the urban landscape unfolds before your eyes. We witnessed the majestic silhouettes of Mt. Matumtum and Mt. Parker, adorned in lush emerald attire, casting a serene spell. As if that weren’t enough, the sparkling Sarangani Bay extends its embrace, completing the breathtaking canvas.

Dawn unveils a rare spectacle, especially during the Amihan months. Imagine waking up to a sea of clouds, cradled by a gentle chill that evokes the spirit of Christmas. When evening descends, General Santos City comes to life, transforming into a dazzling mosaic of lights.

At Sanchez Peak, you may go on exploration via various trails, each offering a distinct flavor of challenge:

  • The Balakayo Trail: A well-trodden path from Sitio Balakayo, Olympog. Familiar and uncomplicated, it welcomes both novices and experts without the need for a guide.
  • The Balsinang Trail: This is a shortcut, beginning at Purok Balsinang in Olympog. A daring choice for those who relish conquering the trails less taken.
  • The Tukanop Trail: Setting off from Purok Tukanop in Olympog, this trail is renowned for its exhilarating difficulty level, catering to the daring hearts seeking an extra dose of adventure.

As the day comes to a close, Sanchez Peak extends its hospitality with charming cottages and rooms for rent. Those drawn to the allure of camping will find a dedicated area for tents. There’s also a store for essentials. The ascent is made more comfortable with four restrooms, and parking facilities stand ready to accommodate your exploration.

Day 2: A Day at Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

The following day, we decided to go to Lake Sebu. We rode a tricycle going to Bulaong Terminal. We rode a bus from there to Marbel. After getting off at Marbel, we went to the terminal and rode another bus to Surallah. At Surallah, we rode a jeepney going to Lake Sebu. Our tour guide met with us at Lake Sebu then we had our habal-habal ride improvised to accommodate my friend and me.

Our first stop was at Lake Sebu itself so we can witness the beauty of the Lotuses. It’s been said that by 10 in the morning, they’re already in hiding, so it’s very important to arrive early. Our tour guide also showed us a unique chili– turns out it’s the Carolina Reaper! It’s considered to be the spiciest chili in the entire world. Who would have thought that it could also be found in the Philippines?

Our tour guide also shared with us that Miss Universe Catriona Gray also visited there. Because the place was so picturesque, I decided to fly my drone to get nice aerial shots. Lake Sebu is nestled within the ancestral domain of the indigenous T’boli people, the lake and its surrounding areas hold cultural significance and breathtaking beauty that draw visitors from far and wide. I rented a T’boli costume for 50 pesos and there are also souvenir shops wherein you can buy goods from the T’boli tribe. I also tried the zipline ride for 200 pesos.

Let me share more about Lake Sebu. It is composed of three interconnected lakes: Lake Sebu, Lake Seloton, and Lake Lahit. These lakes are fringed by lush forests, rolling hills, and mountains, creating a serene and scenic landscape that’s perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The T’boli people have called the Lake Sebu region home for generations. Their rich cultural heritage is interwoven with the land, and visitors have the opportunity to learn about their traditions, arts, crafts, and way of life. The T’boli are known for their intricate beadwork, weaving, and traditional musical instruments like the “hegalong.”

The Lake Sebu area boasts several stunning waterfalls, with the most famous being the Seven Falls. These majestic cascades are accessible via trekking or ziplining, and each waterfall offers its unique charm. You can also go kayaking on the lakes. The landscape is also a great backdrop for hiking and exploring the surrounding hills.

Lake Sebu is known for its commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism practices. The local community is actively involved in preserving the natural environment and ensuring that tourism benefits both visitors and residents. To fully appreciate the beauty of the region, there are several viewing decks strategically located around the lakes. These decks provide panoramic vistas of the lakes, waterfalls, and the surrounding landscape. All in all, we spent 700 pesos for the guide fee, which is a lower cost compared to the rate of others. We also gave our guide a tip of 300 pesos.

Day 3: Sultan Kudarat Day Tour (La Palmera Mountain Ridge with a side trip to Pangadilan Falls and Rock Formations)

On our third day, we went to Sultan Kudarat. From Tacurong City, we rode a bus going to Datu Paglas, which is our meet-up place with our tour guide. We spent around 1.5-2 hours on the trip. We paid 1,000 pesos per head for the Day Tour. Our tour guide here was Kuya Ali Mongkok (Uncle of Kuya Jeff Abid).

Nestled in the heart of the landlocked town of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat, within the enchanting embrace of South Central Mindanao, lies the hidden treasure known as La Palmera. This captivating haven draws its name from the lush palm plantation that gracefully envelops its majestic ridges. A symbol of sustenance for the B’laans, the indigenous peoples of Sultan Kudarat, the palm plantation provides livelihood and heritage. As of today, it stands as a coveted gem on the map of SOCCSKSARGEN backpacking adventures.

La Palmera bestows a panoramic gift—a 360-degree vista of Sultan Kudarat. Despite its landlocked confines, it serves as a platform to appreciate the boundless expanse that Sultan Kudarat unfolds.

During our exploration, my friend and I were able to embark on treks and witness the majesty of Pangadilan Falls and rock formations. We descended along the river that meanders at the mountain’s feet, and it was such an exhilarating experience that’s surely one for the books.

La Palmera is more than a destination; it’s an immersion into the intertwining world of nature and culture.
