A Journey into South Africa’s Natural Splendors, Vibrant Culture, and Rich History

I had the awesome privilege of exploring South Africa last year from September 28 to October 10. Traveling to Africa is an adventure like no other. With its vast landscapes, rich cultures, and diverse wildlife, Africa offers a unique and unforgettable experience for travelers and locals alike. There is no shortage of incredible sights and experiences on this continent.

Requirements

Of course, traveling to Africa also requires some preparation and planning. Depending on where you’re going, you may need vaccinations, visas, and other travel documents. You may read my previous blog on how I got my South African Visa to know more. It’s important to research the specific requirements for your destination well in advance of your trip. It’s also essential  to be aware of safety considerations, such as crime and political instability, and to take appropriate precautions to ensure your personal safety while traveling.

A bit of background

This is my first solo international trip. My brother was supposed to come with me but due to a sudden change of plans, he wasn’t able to, but I still decided to push through with the trip since I’d been looking forward to it already for such a long time. 

There were challenges posed especially to women travellers like me. As much as like in any other place, armed robberies, carjacking, and snatching are possible to happen. It’s advisable for women travellers to be at home by 7PM. It’s very important to stay alert and cautious at all times. Only hire trusted tour guides from reputable travel agencies.

Tips and Other Recommendations

Aside from safety concerns, there’s also an issue of load-shedding. It is the planned and controlled rolling power outages implemented across the country. These outages are necessary due to the strain on the national power grid, which often struggles to meet the energy requirements of a growing population and industrial sector. Load-shedding is typically implemented on a rotational basis, and the duration of each outage can vary, lasting anywhere from a few hours to several hours at a time. It may be an intimidating experience for tourists– but for residents and businesses, it’s important to approach it with an open mind and adapt accordingly. It’s advisable to prepare candles and flashlights and have your electronic devices charged whenever possible. It’s also a good idea to prepare alternative sources of power like batteries and power banks on hand. It’s also useful to stock up on non-perishable food items. For fellow travellers, it’s recommended to stay informed about the schedule of the load-shedding. Local news outlets provide a schedule and regular updates. By being aware of the timing and duration of the outages, you can plan your activities accordingly. That’s what I personally did, and I was able to make the most out of my time in South Africa. I was still able to witness and experience an abundance of experiences that left me in awe.

Getting Around Johannesburg

On another note, my main mode of transportation was to take an Uber. I had a previous client and he’s based in Johannesburg. He picked me up from the airport and dropped me off at the flat that I rented out from Airbnb. I stayed for 5 days in JoBurg and another 5 days in Cape Town.

One of the main draws of traveling to Africa is the opportunity to witness the incredible wildlife that inhabits the continent. From majestic elephants and giraffes to the big cats of the savannas, Africa is home to some of the world’s most iconic animal species. Safaris are a popular way to see these animals up close, and there are many national parks and reserves throughout the continent that offer guided tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. I booked for a Safari experience in Pilanesberg National Park at Joburg via TripAdvisor. I paid a total of USD 185.11. Please keep in mind that the road is uneven which may affect your overall experience. It was also very hot during that time, so I made sure to have a trusty water bottle with me

I also had the chance to visit Soweto (South Western Township). Soweto is a vibrant township located just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, is a destination that offers both a rich cultural experience and a profound historical significance. This sprawling township is renowned for its pivotal role in the struggle against apartheid and racial segregation, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to delve into South Africa’s complex past. Apartheid, a dark period in South Africa’s history, imposed a system of racial segregation and oppression, with Soweto serving as a focal point for resistance. Despite the hardships endured, Soweto has emerged as a symbol of resilience and triumph, embodying the spirit of the South African people.

During my last day in JoBurg, I visited the Apartheid Museum. Taking videos and pictures inside is prohibited as a sign of respect. One ticket costs 150 Rands. If you’re looking to delve into the nation’s complex past and gain a deeper understanding of its struggles and triumphs, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is an absolute must. This remarkable museum stands as a poignant reminder of the apartheid era and its impact on South African society.

The museum’s architecture itself reflects the stark divisions and inequalities that defined the apartheid era. Upon entering, visitors are randomly assigned either a “white” or “non-white” entrance, creating an immediate sense of segregation. This powerful visual representation sets the stage for what lies ahead, evoking a sense of empathy and introspection.

The exhibits within the Apartheid Museum are thoughtfully curated, providing a comprehensive overview of the apartheid system and its consequences. Through photographs, artifacts, documentary footage, and personal accounts, you’ll gain insight into the daily realities faced by individuals under apartheid’s oppressive regime.

Beyond its exhibits, the Apartheid Museum also offers educational programs and temporary exhibits that delve deeper into specific aspects of apartheid and its aftermath. These initiatives provide opportunities for continued learning and engagement, ensuring that the museum remains a dynamic space for dialogue and social awareness. Visiting the museum is definitely a thought-provoking experience, as well as a necessary one. It invites travellers like me and you to confront the past while inspiring hope for a better future.

Getting Around Cape Town

After my stay at JoBurg, my next destination was Cape Town. I went there to meet with my friend, Sheena, and to also check out beautiful spots like the Table Mountain. On my first day, I just decided to rest inside my hotel which was located in the Cape Town CBD. It’s a practical choice since it’s accessible to everything like grocery stores and tourist shops, among others. I was able to book via Airbnb. 

The next day, I met with my friend Sheena and her partner. We went to Hermanus, which is known as the whale-watching capital of the country. Located just a scenic drive away from Cape Town, Hermanus captures the hearts of travelers and locals alike with its breathtaking landscapes and a laid-back atmosphere. The combination of rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters created a postcard-perfect setting that left us in awe.

Hermanus is renowned for its whale-watching opportunities, as southern right whales grace the coastline during this time. We were able to witness these majestic creatures up close and personal, as they breach and frolic in the bay. Whether from the shore or a boat excursion, the sight of these gentle giants is an awe-inspiring experience that will definitely stay with us forever.

Beyond its incredible marine life, Hermanus offers a plethora of outdoor activities that cater to all interests. Nature enthusiasts can embark on scenic hikes along the renowned Cliff Path, which stretches for several kilometers along the coastline. The panoramic views of the ocean and the chance to spot dolphins, seals, and seabirds make it a truly memorable adventure.

The next day, I joined a group for a full Cape Town Day Tour experience. Our first destination was Bo Kaap, a neighborhood renowned for its picturesque streets adorned with brightly painted houses. As we wandered through these vibrant lanes, the rich history and culture of the Cape Malay community came alive. The aromatic scents of spices filled the air, and the warm smiles of locals greeted us at every turn.

Next, we made our way to the breathtaking coastal stretch of Maiden Cove and Camps Bay. This picturesque setting offers a perfect opportunity to relax, take a dip in the refreshing waters, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along the palm-fringed promenade. If you’re also planning to visit here, treat yourself to a delightful beachside lunch at one of the trendy cafés, with panoramic ocean views as your backdrop.

We were awe-struck as we embarked on one of the world’s most breathtaking coastal drives – Chapman’s Peak Drive. With its dramatic cliffs, winding roads, and sweeping vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, this route offers a sensory overload of natural beauty. As we wind our way along the coastal cliffs, we can’t help but to capture the panoramic views that left us breathless.

Our journey took a charming turn as we arrived in Simon’s Town, a coastal gem with a delightful surprise – Nuisance the Dog. Nuisance, a beloved resident of Simon’s Town, has become an icon in his own right. His friendly nature and heartwarming story have won the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Next stop, at Boulders Bay, we were greeted by a colony of African penguins, waddling along the pristine beaches and nesting amidst the granite boulders. It was so fun to see and interact with various animals during our trip!

Our journey continued to the iconic Cape Point, a place where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans dramatically converge. The sheer grandeur of the rugged cliffs and endless ocean views rendered us speechless. We lingered for a while to breathe in the crisp sea air, visit the historic lighthouse, and keep an eye out for wildlife, as baboons and various bird species call this area home.

Our final destination is the legendary Cape of Good Hope, a place steeped in history and myth. We stood at the southwestern tip of the African continent, feeling the immense power of the crashing waves and the significance of this geographical landmark. As the day drew to a close, we made a quick stop at Muizenberg Beach, renowned for its vibrant beach huts and excellent surfing conditions. It was the perfect spot to end the long yet fulfilling day.

After the Day Tour around Cape Town, I ventured out for a filling day at Stellenbosch. It’s a bustling place wherein tourists, locals, and even students can interact because there are many universities around the area. Stellenbosch is synonymous with world-class wines, and it beckons wine lovers from around the globe to indulge in its vineyard-dotted landscapes. Set against the backdrop of majestic mountains, the vineyards in Stellenbosch produce exceptional wines that have gained international acclaim. The knowledgeable winemakers and estate owners will guide you through the tasting experience, sharing their passion and expertise, and providing insights into the winemaking process.

Aside from the wine-tasting experience, you can also go on a gastronomic feast! Stellenbosch’s gastronomic scene is a treat for food enthusiasts, offering a plethora of dining options that showcase the region’s bountiful produce. Many wine estates boast exceptional restaurants where you can indulge in farm-to-table cuisine paired with their finest wines. Sample delectable dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients, and let the flavors of the Winelands dance on your palate. Don’t miss the opportunity to try traditional South African dishes, such as bobotie or biltong, which add a unique touch to the culinary journey.

I saved the best for last before heading back to Manila. I had the chance to hike Table Mountain, an awe-inspiring natural wonder that graces the city’s skyline. Needless to say, I was  captivated by its grandeur, breathtaking views, and the sense of wonder that awaits atop this majestic peak.

For those who are also planning to experience the majesty of the Table Mountain, you usually have two options: the adventurous souls can opt for a hike, while those seeking a more leisurely experience can take the cable car. Going up, I decided to hike, and I availed the cable car to descend. Various hiking trails cater to different fitness levels, each rewarding hikers with unparalleled views and a sense of accomplishment. The popular Platteklip Gorge route provides a direct ascent, while the more adventurous may opt for scenic routes like India Venster or Skeleton Gorge. Whichever trail you choose, the journey will undoubtedly leave you in awe of the mountain’s beauty.

As we reached the summit, we were greeted by a tapestry of natural wonders. Table Mountain National Park boasts an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, with over 2,200 plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The true highlight of Table Mountain lies in the unparalleled views it offers. Upon reaching the summit, we were rewarded with a 360-degree panorama that stretches as far as the eye can see. We witness the sprawling cityscape of Cape Town, framed by the sparkling ocean and majestic mountain ranges. It was a priceless, unforgettable moment.

Conclusion

Traveling to South Africa is a rich and rewarding experience that offers a glimpse into a world unlike any other. From its incredible wildlife to its history and vibrant cultures, there is something for every traveler on this vast and diverse continent. While it may require some preparation and planning, the memories and experiences I gained from my trip are sure to last a lifetime.
